Sørøya being Norway's second largest island is a dream destination for anyone who loves deep-sea fishing. With its spectacular coastline and rich fishing ground surrounding the island, it is a fantastic place to experience the thrill of fishing in the open sea. Climate here can be rough and harsh at times, but also incredibly exiting. We are far North, next to the Barents Sea, with excellent fishing grounds right outside the window.

Starting from mid February and till May the Arctic cod (skrei in Norwegian) comes to the fjords to spawn, and the sea teems with fish. The Arctic climate can bring both winter storms - so tough that you can see no longer than the top of your nose, and calm seas and clear skies. Although there may be few days in the port due to bad weather, you still have a great change to catch a coveted trophy. This season is for the toughest!

May, June and July offer stable fishing weather and lovely midnight sun. This means long, bright days and almost infinite time for fishing. In addition to chasing a big cod, summer can offer an intense combat with a big coalfish, a face-to-face meeting with a nice sharp-toothed wolffish, or the hunt for a huge halibut. Moreover, it is allowed to fish redfish during the summer months.

On Sørøya, the autumn heralds the arrival of the anglers' dream - the mighty halibut season. Starting from August enthusiasts flock to the pristine waters, armed with their fishing rods, ready to battle with a monster halibut that call these depths home. As September rolls in, the excitement reaches its peak, and for sure, there will be screaming reels and bent rods. This month marks the prime window when these colossal creatures are most active and eager to take the bait. But don't fret if you miss the peak: the halibut season continues until the end of October. The only backside may be the weather that gets rougher and the days that become shorter.

We say it is always fishing season on Sørøya. Whenever you come, you will have a good chance of catching a big fish!

The best seasons for fishing vary depending on what you're looking for in terms of fish: size, quantity, and species! For halibut, without a doubt, the hottest time is from August to October. During this period, there are also good opportunities for large cod and pollock. Typically, the fishing improves as you move towards October, but the weather worsens and the days get shorter. This is a small dilemma you need to consider. If your main focus is cod, the middle of March to the middle of April is the clear favorite, with the skrei (migrating cod) coming close to shore around Sørøya. The weather can be rough during this time, but if you manage to get out, you're guaranteed large quantities of fish and good sizes. Halibut can also be found and is usually eager to bite during this period.
Halibut fishing during the high season (August to October) is very good, even in the local area! You can find good halibut spots within a 5-30 minute drive from the harbor! The very best areas are naturally a bit further away from the village, but there are definitely good spots where large fish are frequently caught very close by as well!
