Fishing rules

Welcome to your fishing holiday in Norway!

The coastal fish stocks in Norway are under pressure and we need to increase our efforts to ensure that future generations will also be able to enjoy fishing as a sport or recreation in Norway.

Fish in the sea are free for all, but we have a goal to safeguard fish stocks for the future. You are therefore very welcome to fish in the Norwegian sea waters provided that you follow a set of simple rules.

  1. Tackles: you may only use handheld tackle when fishing in the sea. You are not permitted to use nets, pots, traps, lines etc.
  2. Export quota: only tourists fishing from a registered fishing camp (Big Fish Adventure / Hasvik Hotel AS is a registered  fishing camp) are allowed to bring fish or fish products out of the country when leaving Norway. The limit of 18 kilos of fish or fish products can be exported out of Norway twice a year.
  3. Catch registration: registered fishing camps (as we are) are obliged to report catches to the fisheries authorities. Therefore you must register your catch daily using the GoFish system. It is mandatory to register all catch of cod, halibut, coalfish, redfish and catfish. The catch shall be registered with the number of fish per boat and per fishing trip by catch date and shall also include released fish. Fishing trips without catch should also be reported (zero catch) according to the Regulation on reporting of catch by tourist fishing camps dated 20 December 2017.
  4. You must keep a distance of more than 100 meters from the closest fish farm when fishing. All boat traffic shall keep a distance of at least 20 meters from fish farms and moorings for fish farms.
  5. You are not permitted to sell the fish you have caught.
  6. Please respect wildlife and do not litter. It is strictly prohibited to store fish guts in the filleting room or on the quay. The fish waste shall be tossed into the sea outside the inner breakwater. It shall not be spilled into the harbour under any circumstances.
  7. Minimum / maximum size of fish and protected species: you must comply with the regulations for minimum size of fish:

COD: min. 44 cm

HALIBUT: min. 84 cm. Halibuts over 130 cm are to be released. It is allowed to take 1 halibut per stay per 1 person. It is not allowed to fish halibut from 20 December till 31 March.
