Sørøya is a truly special place. Located in Finnmark in the far north of Norway, the island is surrounded by the Norwegian Sea and is well known for its incredible fishing, dramatic scenery, wildlife and small coastal communities.
For many of our guests, the fishing may be the main reason for visiting, but it doesn’t take long to realise there is much more to Sørøya than what lies beneath the water. From mountains and secluded beaches to wildlife, hiking trails and the Midnight Sun, the island offers plenty to discover away from the boats.
Big Fish Adventure is based in Hasvik, one of the main villages on Sørøya. Despite the island’s remote location, you’ll find many of the everyday essentials you need during your stay close by, including a supermarket, fuel, restaurant and transport connections.
One of the things we love most about Sørøya is its slower pace of life. There are no traffic jams, shopping centres or busy tourist areas. Instead, you’ll find open spaces, spectacular scenery and a genuine Northern Norwegian community.
In this guide, we’ll show you around our island, explain where to find the everyday essentials and introduce you to some of the places and experiences worth discovering during your stay.
We are very lucky on Sørøya to be served by both air and ferry, with regular connections to the Norwegian mainland.
Widerøe offers regular flights directly to Hasvik Airport, making flying one of the easiest ways to reach us. Flights operate throughout the week, apart from Saturdays, and we recommend booking well in advance to secure the best possible fares.
Another option is to travel by ferry from Øksfjord to Hasvik. Regular sailings connect the mainland with Sørøya and allow you to bring a vehicle across to the island if required. We always recommend checking the latest ferry timetable before travelling, as departure times can vary throughout the year.
Whichever way you choose to reach Sørøya, we can arrange to meet you on arrival with our dedicated transfer service and return you in plenty of time for your departure.
There are a couple of supermarkets on Sørøya, and we are extremely lucky to have one almost directly opposite our restaurant and bar. It is only a few minutes’ walk from the hotel and our main harbour, making it very convenient for guests staying with us.
Coop Prix Hasvik stocks almost everything you are likely to need during your stay, including groceries, toiletries, some clothing and a range of everyday essentials.
Opening hours are normally Monday to Saturday, with the supermarket closed on Sundays. We recommend checking the latest opening hours before your visit.

If you would rather leave the cooking to someone else, we serve freshly prepared meals in our restaurant each day. We also regularly have specials available, so be sure to ask the team about Today’s Special.
We can also tailor a full-board option for you and your group. This can include a buffet-style breakfast with fresh bread, ham, cheese, cereals, yoghurt and fresh fruit, followed by lunch in the restaurant or a packed lunch to take with you for a day on the water, and an evening meal when you return.

In recent years, a dedicated fuel pump has been installed in Hasvik harbour, making refuelling our boats much easier. This means there is no longer any need to carry empty fuel cans to the public fuel station and then transport them back to the harbour.
The fuel pump is located just around the corner from our main harbour. Simply take your boat around to the fuelling jetty, where you will find the pump.
Payment is made directly at the pump, so make sure you take a debit or credit card with you when you need to refuel.
We recommend having two people when refuelling as this makes the process much easier. One person can operate the payment terminal while the other handles the fuel nozzle and refuels the boat.
The system is very straightforward to use, but don’t worry if you’re unsure the first time. One of our guides or members of the Big Fish Adventure team will be happy to show you how it works.
If you need fuel for your car or hire vehicle, there is also a public fuel station located next to the supermarket in Hasvik.
The pumps are self-service and payment is made by debit or credit card.
Fishing may be what brings many of our guests to Sørøya, but there is much more to our beautiful island than what lies beneath the water. Whether the weather keeps you ashore for the day, you fancy a break from fishing, or you are travelling with family or a partner who doesn’t fish, there are plenty of ways to enjoy your time on the island.
One of the best ways to experience Sørøya is simply to get outside and explore. The island has some fantastic walking and hiking opportunities, ranging from gentle walks to more challenging routes across the mountains.
You don’t have to travel far to find incredible views, and on a clear day the scenery across the surrounding mountains, fjords and Norwegian Sea can be spectacular. Remember that the weather can change quickly, so always wear suitable footwear and clothing and let someone know where you are heading if you are planning a longer walk.
Beaches probably aren’t the first thing that come to mind when you think about an island in Northern Norway, but Sørøya has some beautiful secluded beaches.
They are perfect for a walk, photography or simply finding somewhere peaceful to sit and enjoy the surroundings. You may even find that you have the entire beach to yourself.
The water might not always tempt you in for a swim, though.
Sørøya has several small communities that are well worth exploring during your stay.
Big Fish Adventure is based in Hasvik, but if you have access to a car, take some time to travel around the island and visit Breivikbotn and Sørvær. Driving around Sørøya is an experience in itself, with incredible coastal scenery and plenty of opportunities to stop for photographs along the way.
Don’t be surprised if the journey takes considerably longer than expected simply because you keep stopping to admire the views!
You never quite know what you are going to see on Sørøya.
Sea eagles are regularly spotted around the island, while the surrounding waters are home to whales, dolphins and a huge variety of seabirds. Reindeer can also sometimes be seen while travelling around the island.
Keep your camera or phone close because some of the best wildlife encounters happen when you least expect them.
Visit Sørøya during the summer and you can experience something very different from home: the Midnight Sun
During this period, the sun does not disappear below the horizon, meaning it remains light throughout the night. Sitting outside late in the evening while it still feels like the middle of the day is something that has to be experienced to be fully appreciated.
It also means there is no rush to get back from an evening walk because it isn’t going to get dark!
Guests visiting during the darker months have the opportunity to experience another of Northern Norway’s natural wonders, the Northern Lights.
Sørøya’s remote location and lack of large towns means there is very little light pollution, creating excellent conditions when the aurora decides to make an appearance.
There are never any guarantees with the Northern Lights, but when the sky lights up above Sørøya it can become one of the most memorable moments of your entire trip.
You don’t need to be a professional photographer to come home with some amazing pictures from Sørøya.
Mountains, fishing villages, beaches, wildlife, colourful skies and the constantly changing weather provide endless opportunities. Sometimes simply jumping in the car and seeing where the road takes you can result in some of the best memories of your holiday.
Perhaps one of the most underrated things to do on Sørøya is nothing at all.
Life here moves at a different pace. Grab a coffee, take a walk around the harbour, sit and watch the boats come and go or simply find somewhere quiet and enjoy the view.
For many of our guests, escaping the traffic, crowds and everyday rush back home becomes just as much a part of their Sørøya experience as the fishing itself.
Sørøya may feel wonderfully remote, but you will still find most of the everyday essentials you need during your stay. There are, however, a few things worth knowing before you leave home.
The currency used in Norway is the Norwegian Krone (NOK).
Norway is becoming increasingly cashless, and debit and credit cards are accepted almost everywhere. We recommend bringing a suitable payment card with you rather than relying on cash during your stay.
It is also worth checking with your bank before travelling to make sure your card is enabled for use abroad and to understand any charges for overseas transactions.
All of our accommodation has Wi-Fi available for guests, making it easy to keep in touch with family and friends, check the weather or, more importantly, share pictures of that new personal-best fish!
Mobile phone coverage is generally available around the populated areas of Sørøya, although coverage can become more limited when travelling into some of the island’s more remote areas or when out at sea.
If you take prescription medication, we strongly recommend bringing enough for your entire holiday, along with a little extra in case your travel plans are unexpectedly delayed.
Essential medication should always be carried in your hand luggage when flying rather than placed in checked baggage.
If you wear prescription glasses or contact lenses, bringing a spare pair is also a very good idea.
Hopefully you will never need them, but it is always useful to know Norway’s main emergency numbers:

Save these numbers in your phone before heading out, particularly if you plan to explore some of the more remote parts of Sørøya.
The weather in Northern Norway can change remarkably quickly, and conditions on the water can feel very different from those on land.
Warm layers, good waterproof clothing and suitable footwear can make a huge difference to your holiday, particularly during the colder months.

A little preparation before you leave home can make a big difference once you arrive, leaving you free to relax, enjoy Sørøya and make the most of your time with us.
Yes. There are supermarkets on Sørøya, including Coop Prix in Hasvik, which is conveniently located just a few minutes’ walk from Big Fish Adventure’s hotel and main harbour. You can buy groceries, toiletries and many of the everyday essentials you may need during your stay.
Yes. There is a public self-service fuel station in Hasvik for cars and other vehicles. There is also a dedicated marine fuel pump in Hasvik harbour, making it easy for our fishing guests to refuel their boats. Payment is made by debit or credit card.
Not necessarily. If you are staying with Big Fish Adventure primarily for a fishing holiday, many of the facilities you will need are within walking distance, and we can arrange transfers to and from the airport or ferry terminal.
We also have accommodation outside Hasvik where having access to a car can be very useful. We have a hire car available for guests, so speak to a member of our team when booking if you think you may need one.
However, if you would like to explore more of Sørøya during your stay, having access to a car gives you much more freedom to visit places such as Breivikbotn, Sørvær and some of the island’s more remote and scenic areas.
There is plenty to experience away from the fishing. Sørøya offers fantastic hiking and walking opportunities, secluded beaches, incredible scenery, wildlife watching and plenty of opportunities for photography.
You can also explore the island’s small coastal communities or simply slow down and enjoy the peace and quiet of life in Northern Norway.
Yes. During the darker months of the year, Sørøya can be a fantastic place to experience the Northern Lights. The island’s remote location and low levels of light pollution can provide excellent viewing conditions when aurora activity and the weather are favourable.
The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon, so unfortunately we can never guarantee when they will appear – but when they do, they can be spectacular.
Yes. Hasvik Airport (HAA) is located on Sørøya and is only a few minutes from Big Fish Adventure. Widerøe operates flights connecting Hasvik with the Norwegian mainland.
We can also arrange our dedicated transfer service to collect you from Hasvik Airport and take you directly to your accommodation.
