Planning a fishing holiday to Northern Norway? This ultimate Norwegian fishing holiday packing guide covers everything you need to bring for a safe, enjoyable, and stress-free adventure on the waters of Sørøya.
The team at Big Fish Adventure has put together this practical guide based on years of experience hosting anglers from all over the world, helping to ensure your trip goes as smoothly as possible from the moment you leave home until your final cast. Remember that weather forecasts in Northern Norway can change quickly, so if in doubt, pack it.
One of the most important things to pack for a Norwegian fishing holiday is high-quality waterproof clothing. Weather conditions in Norway can shift rapidly from sunshine to rain and strong winds within hours, especially on the open ocean.
It’s always advisable to come prepared. There is an old saying: “There is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing.”

Make sure you bring:
Layered clothing works best because temperatures on the water are often much colder than on land. It’s also advisable to bring a couple of sets of thermals.
Choosing the right footwear is essential for comfort and safety during your stay with us. We would advise bringing either a pair of waterproof walking boots or thermal wellies, depending on the time of year.
All our boats are made from aluminium and can feel cold underfoot, so it is essential that you arrive with suitable footwear as we do not rent footwear.
Good grip and waterproof protection will help keep you comfortable during long fishing days.

Although many fishing days are spent on calm seas, conditions in Northern Norway can change quickly and even experienced anglers can occasionally suffer from motion sickness, so we strongly advise bringing medication with you as we really do not want seasickness to impact your holiday.
There are also certain things to avoid before heading out to sea. Try not to drink too much caffeine, as it can increase your heart rate, and avoid drinking too much alcohol the night before.
Sea-sickness tablets, wristbands, or motion sickness gum can make a huge difference to your trip.
Although Norway is known for cold weather, sun exposure can still be intense because sunlight reflects strongly off the sea. Even during March and April, the sun can be surprisingly strong, so we strongly advise bringing the following items.

Polarised sunglasses are especially useful because they reduce glare and improve visibility while fishing. You will spend a good few hours each day looking at the water surface so having a good quality pair will cut all the glare.
A waterproof dry bag is one of the best items you can bring on your fishing trip. These bags fold away very small for travelling, taking up almost no room in your suitcase, but they provide a huge range of benefits when out on the boat.
They help protect:
Saltwater, rain, and sea spray are unavoidable when out on the ocean, and using a standard bag can quickly become frustrating when all your belongings get wet. So get yourself a dry bag, you wont regret it.

Sørøya offers some of the best scenery in northern Norway, from flat calm fjords and dramatic mountains to an incredible variety of wildlife and, of course, your catches.
We cannot recommend strongly enough that you bring some technology to capture every moment so you can share your memories with family and friends when you return home.
Norway uses European two-pin plugs (Type C and Type F) with a 230V supply.
Before leaving for your fishing holiday, double-check that you have all your important travel essentials. It may sound obvious, but how many times have you gone to leave the house and suddenly had that dreaded feeling of “Have I packed everything?”
Make sure you are prepared and give yourself plenty of time before leaving home, and use the below as a tick list
If travelling with fishing luggage, check your airline’s baggage rules in advance.

As anglers, we love to spend as much time on the water as possible, weather permitting, and sometimes you may spend more time at sea than on land. It is important to stay hydrated and keep your energy levels up throughout the day.
Many people do not think about dehydration in Norway because of the colder temperatures, but please be aware that it is very easy to become dehydrated due to the dry climate. Make sure you take plenty of drinks with you each day.
Staying warm, hydrated, and comfortable will help you enjoy your trip even more.
Packing correctly for your fishing holiday can make your trip far more enjoyable. Weatherproof clothing, warm layers, waterproof storage, and practical travel essentials are all key to staying comfortable in our challenging coastal conditions.
We recommend waterproof outer layers, thermal clothing, fleece or wool mid-layers, a warm hat, gloves, and suitable footwear. Dressing in layers is the best way to stay comfortable in Northern Norway’s changing conditions.
While not essential, we highly recommend using one for comfort and safety. If you do not own one, flotation suits can be hired from Big Fish Adventure.
Yes. Even experienced anglers can occasionally suffer from motion sickness, so we strongly recommend bringing medication with you.
Absolutely. Polarised sunglasses reduce glare from the water and make long days on the boat much more comfortable.
Yes, many guests bring their own tackle. We recommend using equipment suitable for large species such as Halibut and Cod.
Weather conditions can change quickly and it is not unusual to experience sunshine, wind, and rain all in the same day. Good waterproof clothing is essential.
If we had to choose one item, it would be high-quality waterproof clothing. Staying warm and dry can make a huge difference to your overall experience.
We hope you have found this list helpful and that it has given you some motivation to get prepared and ready for your adventure. If you are ever unsure about what to bring, or need any help or advice, we are always here to help.

Far from many anglers know that chances of catching a monster halibut in May are just incredible! In 2023 a total of 11 halibuts over 200cm were caught here on Sørøya, and at least the double were lost during the fight.
